Dental Tourism
Dentist in Silver Spring MD
The rate of patients traveling abroad to receive dental care is on the rise, often referred to as “Dental Tourism”. According to Josef Woodman, CEO of Patients Beyond Borders, “We estimate that in 2012, 400,000 Americans crossed international borders for dental care.”
The main reason patients travel abroad to have dental care is the lower cost of care outside of the United States. At first glance this is very appealing but the QUALITY of dental care is often over looked. In the United States we have rigid standards governing how dental care is delivered, who delivers this care and materials used. These standards of care are what sets apart the care here vs. abroad.

During the last couple of weeks, I have seen multiple patients that have come to my office in Silver Spring Maryland for emergency dental care and the underlying cause of the emergency has been dental work that was performed abroad. In all cases, the patients had no idea the care provided was not up to the standards we have here. I strongly urge all my patients and potential new patients to avoid traveling abroad for dental care. In most cases the work has to be redone and the cost of care will end up being more in the long run.
*It should be noted that NOT all care provided abroad is below the standards of care, however the risk is not worth it.*
